In both the iron sulfide hypothesis and the lipid membrane hypothesis, small, enclosed spaces are suggested as the precursors of the first cells. What role does having a small, enclosed space play in both these hypotheses? It demonstrates how small cells could be used to build large organisms. It creates surface area on which reactions can take place. It helps explain why modern cells are small and enclosed. It provides a space in which molecules can be concentrated.
