Solve: (x - 8)(x + 11) = 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea i would too

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

if two numbers multiplied together give you zero, then one of them must be zero - agreed?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

@TheScentofWolfBlood you can reply by typing into the reply box below.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know how to reply, I wasn't paying attention. :P And yes, agreed.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

:)

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

ok, so we have two numbers here: (x - 8) AND (x + 11), which give zero when multiplied together

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

therefore, we can say that either: x - 8 = 0 OR, x + 11 = 0 agreed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Agreed

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

gr8! - now just solve these two simpler equations to find the two possible values for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, I think I got it now. Thank you

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

yw :)
