SLAVES! Who can help??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

me i hope

OpenStudy (gabylovesyou):

lol alright well this is what my lesson says : Because of the demand for cotton and tobacco in Europe, the colonists needed more workers in their fields and help at home. They depended on the transatlantic slave trade (also called “triangular trade” for the triangle formed by the trade routes) to supply manual labor. Having proven themselves capable workers on sugar plantations in the Caribbean, enslaved Africans were a commodity that colonists bought and sold. Stripped of their rights and freedom, slaves were beaten, separated from their families, and worked continually. While some slaves worked as butlers, sailors, and launderers, others held jobs as carriage drivers and grooms. Slaves were also artisans such as carpenters, stonemasons, blacksmiths, and weavers.

Why were slaves important for the economy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (gabylovesyou):

k thanks!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Back then, slaves were a near no cost way to farm. Because they were forced to do labor, no payment was needed, and slave owners made them work nonstop. They didn't have rights and therefore didn't have breaks. Also, because they were mainly from western Africa, they were used to planting rice, which is even a staple grain for southern U.S.A. Without them, the colonies wouldn't have flourished the way they did, and plantations would have suffered, as well as people would have starved to death.
