What does "Play it Again Sam" mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You might be surprised to find out that it's actually a long-held misquote from the film, Casablanca. Two characters ask Sam, a piano player, to "Play it." In this case, "it" was a special song that the two of them liked. Over time, it was misquoted so many times that it just stuck to being what it is now. It's usually thrown out for when someone wants something repeated, though not everyone finds it as endearing. Bogart's character, to whom it's usually attributed to, just barks out "Play it" to Sam when he demands the same song that another character asked for. Another saying that comes out from the film is "...this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship." It's a great classic!
