The CIA participated in the Cold War by A. helping design efficient weapons systems. B. carrying out secret operations in other countries. C. spying on the Soviet Union. D. helping the president determine foreign policy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know it is not (C)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You are correct in that the answer is not (C) it was the Office of Strategic Services who did the spying. The CIA was, and still is, an information collection agency which helps compile and synthesis insurmountable evidence and leads to help the president ultimately determine foreign policy; how we will act, react, deal with, sanction, etc. The best answer is (D).

thanks

I think it is actually B, The Office of Strategic Services did not exist during the Cold War. The Office of Strategic Services was the predecessor to the CIA. The CIA did indeed run several operations during the Cold War in foreign countries - most notably the beginnings of the MACVSOG ( Military Assistance Command - Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group), Assassination Attempts and Coups in Iran ( Operation Ajax) and Guatemala.

After reevaluating the question I think you are correct dta255. However, the main purpose of the CIA was and is to gain information for the president for national security and foreign policy: 1. What does the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) do? The Central Intelligence Agency's primary mission is to collect, evaluate, and disseminate foreign intelligence to assist the president and senior US government policymakers in making decisions relating to the national security. The CIA does not make policy; it is an independent source of foreign intelligence information for those who do. The CIA may also engage in covert action at the president's direction in accordance with applicable law. ( https://www.cia.gov/about-cia/faqs/index.html#whatdo) Good working with you!
