plz explain refractive index?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are many ways to explain it but best is in terms of velocity of light. velocity of light varies in diffrent medium. The factor by this it varies with respect to vaccum is refractive index i.e. velocity of light in vaccum/velocity of light in the medium.

how can we explain it in prism.. for example we are finding the refractive index index of prism.. what should be the discription of it?
