This site has started to take a lot of bandwidth of mine.

I have noticed that all the chatboxes download the chats even though we don't need them.

Please fix these issues, or I'd start getting the humongous bills.

What do you mean you don't need them? New chats come in in realtime for any group you are a part of.

Let me explain it in detail.
1)I don't participate in chats and put my internet off.
2)I open the chats, and I discover that it's been loading even though I had minimized that chat all this while.
3)I realize that this is one of the reasons why I am losing a gigabyte a day.

This is true, and honestly it makes a lot of sense given our design choices. It'd suck to have to load chats every time you open the chat, and also you'd have no way of knowing when there are new chats if they didn't come in in the background (when it flashes orange). I could see a lot of lag coming from these points.

We do try and conserve bandwidth though so I don't mean to sound dismissive. It helps out you, and it helps us out a lot. The less stuff we have to send down, the lighter the load on our servers. I don't see this chat implementation changing anytime soon, but there has been talk of building a "zen" (chatless) mode. If/when we get around to that, that is definitely something we could optimize to not send chats down.

Chats just consist of texts. I don't think it makes a huge difference in your bandwidth.

@RyanL. It's on the list of things we'd like to do. However, it's not a top priority at the moment. We'll get around to it.
