It is actually a small computer called Microcontroller which has its own memory and you can program it to control the output base on the input. i.e. I remember a friend of mine was using them in the Elevator control board and depend on the operator input it was controlling the elevator motor to move till selected floor. for more explanation refer to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIC_microcontroller
