Find the Asymptotes,Domain, and graph x(x-8)^2/(x+17)^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

some one help please!!

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Start with the domain. Do you know how to go about finding *just* the domain of a function like this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i dont

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i could not figure out how to factor x+17

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Domain means "whatever values of x .. DO NOT "break" the function". what "breaks" a function? 1. zero in the denominator 2. square root of a negative number 3. log of 0 or log of negative numbers So look at your function you have... \[\huge \frac{x(x-8)^2}{(x+17)^3}\] start with 1. What value (or values) of x makes the denominator zero?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Yup. So the domain is all real numbers EXCEPT 17. Now onto step 2 and 3. Do you see any square roots or logs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes 2 and 3

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Wait what... you see square roots and logs?? Where?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh no sry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello?
