What purpose did the Berlin Wall serve?

It separated East and West Germany. More importantly it symbolized the division between communism and democracy during the cold war...which is why the two sides of Germany were divided in the first place.

It served to keep the East Germans who were fleeing the horrible place. So many people were leaving that East Germany wasn't doing well-population wise. It doing well anyway. The East Wall worked some, mostly the East German's went through other countries,
