Well, what's your own opinion? 

Personally, I think certain values are still inherent today that the colonists held. Like for example .. 
- Strong attachments to rights/liberty/etc : America, and American media sources are mostly slightly liberal. Many people are strongly protective of their own rights, though, regardless of political orientation. 
- American Exploration/Conquering : Americans (at least in my opinion) still hold on to the belief that nature and other parts of the world, should be conquered / reigned over, if that makes sense.
