C. Despite extensive attempts by left-learning academics and news media to rewrite history in the past 50 years, in fact much of McCarthy's suspicions were fully justified, and were proved correct by subsequent release of classified intelligence data (in particular the Venona transcripts) and by information obtained from KGB files after the fall of the Soviet Union in the 90s. McCarthy was personally obnoxious -- he was rude, confrontational, and an alcoholic to boot. Not a nice person at all. But he was, nevertheless, quite correct about the degree of Soviet espionage within the United States government in the 40s and 50s, and also correct that it was tolerated and even covered-up by others in government and the media, then and since.
