how can you tell if a ratio is a part-to-part,part-to-whole,or whole-to-part?? NEED REAL HELP

OpenStudy (phi):

do you have a specific question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeahh if i have 10 marbles and 4 marbles....what is the ratio of all the marbles to blue marbles? andd is the ratio a part-to-part,part-to-whole, or whole to part??

OpenStudy (phi):

you left out the colors 10 blue and 4 red? for example. but the question asks what is the ratio of all the marbles to blue marbles? all the marbles sounds like the "whole" or entire amount. the blue marbles sound like they are only a part of all the marbles. so it is common sense. all marbles to blue marbles is whole to part

OpenStudy (phi):

if it asked for the ratio of blue marbles to the red plus blue (and you only have red and blue), then I would say the red plus blue is whole (the entire number of marbles), and blue is part, so part to whole and the ratio of red to blue is part to part
