An airplane passing over Richmond, Virginia at an elevation of 31,000 feet begins its descent to land at Washington, D.C., 108 miles away. Should you assume the pilot just peeks out the window at 31,000 feet, best guesses the angle of descent to take, and hopes he comes close to the airport? If so, I sincerely hope you are not on the plane! Using a logical conjecture, you might predict that the pilot will need to know how many feet the airplane needs to descend per mile to land in Washington. This path is the slope of the aircrafts descent. Find the slope. (Hint: Use graph paper and plot elv.)
