OpenStudy (cwtan):

How sketch the graph \(y=x^4-x^2\)

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Pick a range of values for x...say 1 to 10. Plug in each value into the equation and solve for y. Then plot all of those points on a graph (with the x axis running from 1 to 10).

OpenStudy (cwtan):

Any more correct way to sketch it? and knowing the shape of the graph. Plotting like that will just wasting time. and I just want to sketch it but not plot in a graph paper.

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

factor it first. and find out where it crosses x axis

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Yes, use a graphing calculator

OpenStudy (shane_b):

@ganeshie8: that will only give him the x intercepts....not a sketch of the graph

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

we find out end behavior of the graph and connect the points

OpenStudy (shane_b):

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

since its of degree 4, and leading coefficient is positive, it goes UP, both left side and right side of x-axis
