complete the square and solve wth square root principle. x^2+6x+15=31

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got x=-3+-sqrt(24)

OpenStudy (kainui):

Plug it in and check your own answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol i was thinking the same thing

OpenStudy (kainui):

I'm not saying that to be rude, just to help you be more self-reliant.

OpenStudy (kainui):

That's one of the great things about math, you usually have alternate ways of solving a problem and that allows you to "cheat" on multiple choice tests if you're unsure or don't know. Especially in things like calculus, there are multiple ways of checking your own work which is very useful.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i plugged it in and got 30...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i plugged in both into my calculator and both were wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg... when i completed the square I added 9 to both sides of the equal sign, and when I added 9 and 16 i wrote down 24, not 25. so that messed up the rest of the problem for my self. smh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why don't you check with the discriminant?

OpenStudy (kainui):

Good! Even though you messed up, at least you found your mistake! You seem like you have potential to be really good at math if you practice and play around with it. =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was in high school... but that was 7 years ago and i don't remember doing any of this stuff before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and thank you for the compliment! :)

You have been a lot of help tonight.
