I feel like there's not much differentiation between topics in mathematics (no pun intended...) and so it's just a huge, unfiltered pot of info and not very user friendly in that sense. I also kind of like a little bit of stuff from multiple topics. Swapping between topics is a hassle, and I would go to more, seldom used topics if it wasn't a hassle to check them all. So how about a tab that shows ALL of the things I'm "studying"? That way new stuff pops up as it comes up. The most important part of this though is that it needs a way to turn off separate feeds as well, otherwise mathematics
will drown out all my other feeds. So in addition to this, how about the ability to add tags to things in mathematics so that people can be more specific. Something to say "Geometry, Algebra, Calculus" or something, but only very minimal.
We actually tried this as the primary implementation of the site back in October. It didn't work out so well in practice. :\ We want to implement subtopics, or tags as you called them, for groups like math. Why do you find changing groups to be a hassle?
Yeah, I actually remember in the past the ability to tag things, and that really didn't work. I kind of just threw in that last part. It's just difficult since I know if you broke up the mathematics section, you'd really be kind of breaking up the most popular part of this site. But at the same time it's a hassle to have multiple groups. Why is changing groups a hassle? Because this thing swings down with about 10 groups and it scrolls. Just make the text smaller so you can fit more in there when it swings down and take out the extra space between topics. Maybe it's a minor complaint since I don't know how many other people do it like I do, but that's just how I use OS; constantly swapping between topics.
Tags sounds like an amazing idea. @farmdawgnation can you tell us why it didn't work. It really seems like this something that will help the users out. I don't I think maybe OS is in the right place and time to implement the tags.
So, in a subtopics implementation - in my head at least - we would make it work like an optional filter. You would either see all of math or some subset of math while you're in the group. @RyanL. It resulted in a lot of people tagging everything as Math, even questions that weren't related to Math. Lots of spam.
