a rectangular picture frame measures 28cm by 32cm. the thickness of the frame is the same on all four sides. the thickness of the frame is represented by x. The are of the picture ONLY is A= 4x^2 - 120x +896. determine the thickness of the frame if it is surrounding a picture with area 525 square centimeters.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So do I plug in 525 for A and solve for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in that case I get -371=4x^2 - 120x and I'm stuck again

OpenStudy (phi):

you would write your equation -371=4x^2 - 120x as 4x^2 -120 x +371 =0 though these are ugly numbers, you can use the quadratic formula to solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so I use the quadratic formula? I don't factor out?

OpenStudy (phi):

Something this ugly? I would use the quadratic formula.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh perfect, thanks so much
