this is a interval notation question. 3x+12<30 I got x=6 but I have not idea how to write this as an interval notation. can you also explain how to know which side the infinity sigh goes on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there's no equal sign its an inequality so x<6 meaning from -infinity till just before 6 |dw:1345183078505:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(-\infty,6)\] is this what you mean ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how will I know which side the infinity sigh goes on, in front of the number or behind it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if it is neg or pos

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in interval notation the smaller number is always on the left side, and -infinity in the smallest number you can think of,so its always on the left and never included in the interval

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is which < and > which is greater than and which is less than does this matter in where to put the infty sigh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

<:less than >:greater than -infinity always on the left side and not included +infinity always on the right side and not included

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have a example, by any chance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

example solve the inequality:x+3>6=>x>6-3=>x>3 |dw:1345183788108:dw|
