Solve for x in the proportion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just cross multiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x^2= -16x-30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add 16x and 30 to both sides 2x^2+16x+30=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cross multiplying \[2x ^{2} = -[16x + 30]\] \[2x ^{2} = -16x - 30\] \[2x ^{2} + 16x + 30 = 0\] dividing throughout by 2 \[x ^{2} + 8x + 15 = 0\] splitting the middle term \[x ^{2} + (5x + 3x) + 15 = 0\] on grouping and taking common out \[x ( x + 5) + 3 (x + 5) = 0\] \[(x + 3)(x + 5) = 0\] we can write x + 3 = 0 and x + 5 = 0 therefore, x = (-3) and x = (-5)
