If you are interested in the artificial intelligence aspect of robotics you may want to look at cs berkeley artificial intelligence class online. You may want to look into the radioshack 'The Great Create' it has beginner level projects for creating simple robots using arduino circuits. http://www.radioshackdiy.com/project-gallery

You will just have to search for the parts outlined in the diy guides on the radioshack website. A fairly simple and inexpensive robot can be built for less than $100 us, but you must make a choice based on your experience and ability.
