simplify 10b - b + 1 using distributive property

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can't use the distributive property because there is nothing to multiply. The problem can be simplified by combining like terms: 9b + 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok but can you please explain in steps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(10b) and (b) are like terms because they have the same variable (b). We can combine them the terms (10) and (-1), giving us (9), and putting that back into the equation gives us: 9b
