Mitochondria have two membranes, one of which is biochemically similar to bacteria and the other similar to eukaryotes. How could this happen? It could happen if the mitochondria was once a free living bacteria which was endocytosed by a eukaryote. Rather than being synthesized by the cell mitochondria undergo division similar to binary fission as it occurs in bacteria. Again, this supports the idea mitochondria was a bacterium that got engulfed by a eukaryote.
