What are the foci of.... (I have a picture of the equation)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(–8, –5) and (2, –5) (–8, 5) and (2, 5) (–2, –5) and (8, –5) (–2, 5) and (8, 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its okay! thanks! I just wanna know how to do it because I have another one that i cant do

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

i cant read the tops of fraction - what are they?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+3)^2/169 _ (y+5)^2/144=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

- not _

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

oh ok - i read the 169 as 100 foci are at sqrt(169 - 144) = +/- sqrt 25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which gives me +/-5 but how do I find the coordinate out of that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(–8, –5) and (2, –5) (–8, 5) and (2, 5) (–2, –5) and (8, –5) (–2, 5) and (8, 5) like which one would that be^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cant be. Wouldn't it be the y coordinates?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk Im just confused cause there is no 5 or -5 as a x value in my answer choices

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

ok first find foci of X^2 + Y^2 --- --- = 1 169 144 foci of this is sort(169 - 144) = x = +5 and -5

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

now X = x + 3 so x = +5 and x = -5 will move 3 units to left i.e. x = -8 and 2 similarly the y coordinate 0 will move -5 unit down ( because Y = y+5) so foci are at (-8,-5) and (2, - 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so so so much! I really appreciate it!

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yw
