jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yess

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what numbers did you find

OpenStudy (anonymous):

positve 4 and - 5

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so a^2 - a - 20 factors to (a + 4)(a - 5)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A bigger breakdown is this a^2 - a - 20 a^2 + 4a - 5a - 20 .... Notice how 4a - 5a = -a (a^2 + 4a) + (-5a - 20) a(a+4) - 5(a+4) (a - 5)(a + 4)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You can check the answer by going in reverse and expanding that out
