consecutive multiples of 4 so the sides would be x, x + 4, x + 8 and x + 12

the perimeter is 40 so

x + x + 4 + x + 8 + x + 12 = 40

combine like terms

4x + 24 = 40

subtract 24 from both sides

4x = 16

divide both sides by 4

x = 4

note that x= 4 is the shortest side...you're looking for the LONGEST side
