Describe trench warfare and the new technology.
Trench warfare is where there are two opposing sets of trenches and in the middle was No Man's Land which any attacking troops had to cross. Both sides used thick belts of barbed wire to protect the trenches. Troops caught up in the wire became easy targets for the enemy machine gunners and snipers in an attack the soldiers had to get out of their trenches, pass through their own barbed wire, cross No Man's Land, go through the enemy barbed wire and into their trenches. That was basically impossible by the way. No Man's Land and the trenches quickly became very muddy and soldiers would get trenchfoot, im getting ahead of myself now(: anyways the new technology was things like machine guns, airplanes, tanks, grenades, gases. You can google that too if you need a longer list(:
Trench warfare is a form of warfare in which soldiers dig ditches, rifle pits, or trenches to shield themselves from artillery fire and small arms fire. Trench warfare predates its most famous use in World War I. The first instances of trench warfare developed shortly after the mass use of gunpowder weaponry. Before the 1914, trench warfare was primarily seen during sieges, such as a the Siege of La Rochelle in 1572 and the battles of the American Civil War, notably the Siege of Petersburg in 1864 -1865 and the Siege of Vicksburg by US Grant, as well as the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870s. New technology that came out of trench warfare in these pre world war I periods were: the hand grenade, rudimentary obstacles to slow enemy troops (pre-barbed wire), and the invention of channeled fields of fire, which used these obstacles to funnel troops into kill zones were firepower could be magnified. Technology that came out of World War I included the airplane, which was used to spot targets for artillery and only later became a fighting machine; the usage of massed artillery barrages that were blind fired (using math to hit a target that could not be seen); and poison gas as was previously mentioned. Flamethrowers and submachineguns were also invented as well in response to trenchwarfare.
