Question

How to tell the difference between formulas of different funtional groups?

Answer 1

You'll probably just have to memorize them. If you're just in biology it's not very important and they won't expect you to know this that well. This is a concept that is more fully explained in Organic Chemistry and there's really no point in learning them in biology. Focus on the phosphate group and what role it plays with ATP.
