OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well take a look at the timeline. By the 7th and 8th centuries, the Arabs had conquered Spain and Sicily, drawing off their bases in North Africa, notably Tunisia and Morocco. They launched their invasions from there to annex Sicily and Spain respectively. They used it as a military based. The Arabs converted by conquest, especially during the Rashidun and Ummyad Caliphiates.
