A nest of ants initially contains 500 individuals. The population is increasing by 12% each week. a) How many ants will be there after : I) 10 weeks II) 20 weeks b)How many weeks will it take for the ant population to reach 2000.

hartnn (hartnn):

u realize this is geometric series with a=500,r=12%=0.12 and n=10,20 apply the sum formula ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uhmm, this is not the sum formula, this is just the geometric series, which I am not able to figure out.

hartnn (hartnn):

oh yea,not the sum formula ,THE 'n' TERM FORMULA.. u know that formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I do, but how do I apply it here? :/ And the answer is coming out to a little more than the given answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what if you do this: unitial population is 500 so 12% of 500 is 0,12 times 500 you get 60 population each week then after 10 weeks the population become 500 +60(10)=1100 u do the same for the 20 weeks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is 1550 :/ Thank you for trying though :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how come i don't get that
