A carpenter has a wooden dowel that is 72 cm. He wants to cut it so that one piece is 5 time longer that the other. What is the length of them both?

if x is the smaller peace,what would be the length of the longer one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we can write an equation for this of the total(72) = the small peice (x) plus five times the small peice (5x) so that is 72 = x + 5x. now solve for x
