please help! i have no clue how to do these! many thanks to people who help me :)fifteen times a certain number exceeds a number by 8. if the sum of the numbers is 88, what are the numbers?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

first step is to give labels to the two unknown numbers. so lets call one of then x and the other one y. now "fifteen times a certain number" becomes 15x agreed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

so now can you think of how to express "fifteen times a certain number exceeds a number by 8" using x and y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15x+y=8 ?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

not quite, it would actually be: 15x = y + 8 can you see why this is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i can :) i can do it from here :) THANKS SO MUCH!

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

yw :)
