Oh.... So you want a proof that pi is transcendental and/or a proof that e is transcendental. That's a little easier.

Basically, it was first discovered using this theorem. This is another thing I don't have the sufficient background knowledge to understand, but it is how it was originally proved. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindemann%E2%80%93Weierstrass_theorem

In the book "Abstract Algebra" whose autor is I. N. Herstein. I remember in the chapter 5 "Fields" it's proved that "e" is transcendental.

easier to prove e or pi is irrational than transc.

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

It's far easier to prove irrationality than transcendentality.
