2n squared = -144?

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Can you square any number and have a negative result?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

only if the answer is imaginary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(2n)^2=-144\] this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah but it didnt have the parenthesis.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if parenthesis aren'[t there, start by dividing both sides by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah i did that already and i got -72

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Are you working with imaginary numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not completely sure on what you mean by that.

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

Have you seen answers where the answer has the has the letter "i" in it. You get this when you take the square root of a negative number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

basically imaginary numbers are defined by this \[\sqrt{-1}=i^2\] i is imaginary

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it
