Can someone please help me understand this question? It is absolute Greek to me! List L consists of the numbers 1, square root of 2, x, and x squared. The range of the numbers in list L is 4. Which is greater? A. x B. 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

greek to me too but maybe it means the "range" is the largest number minus the smallest one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it could be \(\{1,\sqrt{2},\sqrt{5},5\}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i really really don't know, so i should be quiet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

satellite73, yes, sorry but I didn't know how to type the "square root" symbol ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve all distances

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[|x²-1|=4 or|x²-x|=4or|x²-\sqrt{2}|=4or|x-1|=4or|x-\sqrt{2}|=4\]

Is this your proposed answer, RaphaelFilgueiras? I don't understand. Can you please explain with a few words? (I am a word person, not numbers!)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the range is the maximum distance, the distance between two numbers is the modulo of difference

Ok, thank you!! :)
