The reason this works is because it's a ratio, like the problem says. Each side will be related to the ratio - in a triangle who's sides are the ratio, the perimeter would be 30 (5 + 12 + 13). however, we know the perimeter, which means that the sides will not be 5, 12, or 13, but rather numbers that are smaller, yet numbers that still conform to that ratio. Once you find x, you're almost there - take the value you get, divide it by 5 to find out the first side, then take the x-value and divide it by 12 to get the second side, then take the x-value and divide it by 13 to get the third side. I hope that makes sense.
