A nurse is reviewing the daily intake and output (I&O) of a patient consuming a clear diet. The drainage bag denotes a total of 1,000 mL for the past 24 hours. The total intake is: 2 8oz cups of coffee 1 16-oz serving of clear soup 1 pint of water consumed throughout the day How much is the deficit in milliliters? (Enter numeric value only.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. Find total intake in mL 2. Minus output from the answer you got from 1.

Since the output is in mL, we need to covert everything to mL. At the reference site I listed above, I click on VOLUME In the units box, type 1. In the left box, scroll down and click on OUNCES [U.S., LIQUID] In the right box, scroll down and click on MILLILITER Click on the CONVERT button. Read the conversion factor of 1 oz = 29.573 mL So for Question #1, we need to convert ounces to milliliters. Since we will be muliplying our conversion factor times ounces, we need to have mL in the numerator and ounces in the denominator to get the ounces to cancel out and leave us with mL. Two 8 oz cups of coffee = 16 oz And 16 oz of coffee * 29.573 mL / 1 oz = 473.168 mL of coffee One 16 oz of soup = 16 oz And 16 oz of soup * 29.573 mL / 1 oz = 473.168 mL of soup One pint of water = 1 pint Here we need to convert pints to mL. At that web page link from above, type 1 in the top box. In the left box, scroll down and click on PINT [U.S., Liquid] The right box should still have MILLILITER highlighted. Click on the CONVERT button. Read the conversion factor of 1 pint = 473.176 mL So 1 pint of water * 473.176 mL / 1 pint = 473.176 mL So the total liquid intake is 473.168 mL of coffee + 473.168 mL of soup + 473.176 mL of water = 1,419.512 mL Since the drainage bag is holding 1,000 mL, the difference is 419.512 mL

*I thought I had posted out the working for you but apparently, it didn't send. I'm sorry for that. I tried to refresh my page but I'm unsure if the site was down for that few minutes or if it was just me (I tried surfing other sites and it could all load fine.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea i think it was just the website..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where is the website

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what the name of the website

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this website

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it says here that the answer is 440 for this problems.. so im just wondering how it came up to be that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then it wasn't just me. :) I'm sorry again that you didn't get the working I typed out. I hoped that it had sent... apparently not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok no problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

32 oz convert to mL= 946.336mL 1 pint convert to mL= 473.1765mL Add together and subtract 1000mL 1419.5125-1000=419.5125mL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, got it , thanks

you're welcome.
