I'm trying to punctuate the sentence "I've always been one of--if not the--youngest." How is that correctly punctuated? Is there italicizing?

wouldn't you use commas, like "I've always been one of, if not the youngest? but wait always been one of what?

Of my peers. I've always been one of, if not the youngest, of my peers. Like that?
