If you want to jump into the deep end, I started using this book: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ It teaches you how to build a linux system from complete source code. It will take a lot of time. It took me 3 weeks to compile all the code on a Pentium 2, but I think the computers these days will probably be able to compile it all in 2-3 days. The site is very complete and gives you a solid understanding of how Linux works from the inside. Another good distro that will give you an inside look at how linux works is: http://www.gentoo.org Their handbook is very complete and takes you step by step on building your own linux build from the source. Good luck! Ask as many questions as you can because Linux is definitely a big step to take, but definitely well worth it.
