let's say that 9x+4x-4 is the problem, since both x's are to the first power, they both are added together to make it a second degree expression. To determine whether it's a polynomial or trinomial is how many terms there are. So the problem I presented is a trinomial, because 9x , 4x, and -4 are all terms and there are three of them. Hence the tri- in trinomial.
