The battle of long island is a prime example of when he used great judgment weather to attack and hold their ground or retreat. In this battle, the Americans had their backs to the Hudson and the British navy would be at their backs in the morning. George Washington made the decision to retreat in the dark of night some small boats transported the general and his troop including the cannons and horses. By the time, the British found out what was happening the Americans were safely on the banks of Manhattan. George Washington was a great leader for the Americans because he was a southerner fighting in a war that was mainly in New England. Because he was a southerner he had more troops coming in from the south because they felt like they had a role in the was too.
