solve using addition principle -2/3+y=-1/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we have to add the -2/3 to the other side to isolate (and solve for) y: \[{-2\over 3}+y={-1\over4}~~~~\rightarrow~~~~y={2\over3}-{1\over4}\] now to subtract those we need to have a common denominator:\[y={2\over3}-{1\over4}~~~~\rightarrow~~~~y={8\over12}-{3\over12}\]now just simplify the right side:\[y={8\over12}-{3\over12}~~~~\rightarrow~~~~y={5\over12}\]
