why do we measure mass in weight? if mass is how much space we take up then, how do we measure how much space we take up in weight? i mean newtons are the right tool of measurement for this right? if they are, why do we don't always use then instead? Many teachers have tried to make me understand, but i just can't.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

simple.... 1.layman cant undrstand the meaning of newtton. 2.to measure mass a physical banace is req, which is not avaialable to every1 but spring balances are radily available to every1 3.to get weight mass has to be multiplied by "g= 9.8 ",which is difficult for every1 so with few reasons, the general publik is using wight units s Kg and will continue to do so,....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

clear now?????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the confusion....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well the entire mass/ weight thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hahahaha,.. ok it goes like this...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mass is not something which u measure as sonthing ocupying space..thats volume..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mass is how much atoms are there in the body...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

weight is with how much force all those atoms are getting attracted towards the centre of erth...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all weging machine just measure that force not mass..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my teachers hAD it all wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

means????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what they told u???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry computer problems

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go on...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they told me that mass is how much space we take up in outerspace

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well thats not correct completely... u see if there is mass that is going to take up some space....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bt that spce it will take up depends upon the distance between the atoms of the that body...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

simple answer is ice and watre... water expands on freezing...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and takes up more space on boiling...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u summarize all you have said so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.mass is not something which u measure as sonthing ocupying space..thats volume.. 2.mass is how much atoms are there in the body... 3.weight is with how much force all those atoms are getting attracted towards the centre of erth... 4.all weighing machine just measure that force not mass..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok now..????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and mass requires physical or beam balance...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go take down the whole c;lass...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where u from???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was born in india and came to the us when i was 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good luck...
