If you are taking a limit from the left (- side), then use the part of the piecewise defined function that is used when x<=1.

Plug 1 into the equation that exists when x is on the - side of 1.\[\lim_{x \rightarrow 1^{-}}=(1)^{2}-1\] for the first one.

For the right side (+ side), use the part of the function that exists for x>=1.\[\lim_{x \rightarrow 1^{+}}=4-(1)\]
