the key to answering the question correctly is "on the SURFACE of the cell..."

SEM is utilized to study the topography (use a mnemonic device to remember - TOPography, meaning top/surface) of specimens. check page 95 of the attachment and see if this matches.

SEM is usually used to study the surface of the cells, and TEM is used to study the internal structures of cells, such as its organelles.
