the gasoline gauge on a van initially read 1/3 full when 10 gallons were added to the tank the gauge read 3/4 full how many more gallons are needed to fill the tank?

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

ok, best way to solve these is to use algebra. so lets call the capacity of the tank c gallons. this means that initially the tank contained c/3 gallons as it was 1/3 full. ok so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :)

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

good, you are then told that when 10 gallons are added it become 3/4 full.

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

this translates to: 3c/4 = c/3 + 10

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

agreed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

ok, so now you just need to solve this equation - do you know how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kinda

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

why don't you have a go and I'll help if you get stuck
