Magnetic Potnential Energy?

As you try to attract two magnets there is P.energy that would convert to K.energy and that energy would reduced as they are attracted closer and the force is reduced as well. Vice versa when repelled, as they are close to each other there is a great force and potential energy based on the magnetic field. When repelled as they become far from each other the energy would be reduced so as the force?

Does this makes sense? If so, what factors would cause that attraction/repulsion? Magnetic field is the major factor right? What else? Type, strenght etc..?
