How does phytoplankton affect the rest of the hydrosphere, as well as the geosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere.?
phytoplankton are the primary Oxygen producers and can be considered the very bottom of the food chain. Without phytoplankton small animals cannot eat, once they die bigger animals cannot eat, and so on and so on. So looking into the atmosphere, if phytoplankton does most of the CO2 conversion to O and they were not around the entire planet would become much hotter due to the high concentration of green houses gases. Additionally without new Oxygen being added to the atmosphere, the ozone would continue to deplete allowing the Earth to become scorched by the sun's rays. This is only the tip of this ice berg. Without Phytoplankton this planet would be screwed.....seriously.
Thank you so much. That was VERY helpful!!! @MathBlonde
