Leon's age can be described as 1 less than 4 times his cousin’s age. If his cousin’s age is represented by the variable "m", write the algebraic expression representing Leon's age using "m".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(1-m)4 ??

OpenStudy (ash2326):

@lysbadiukiewicz let's do this in steps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please lol

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Cousin's age is represented by the variable m Leon's age can be described as 1 less than 4 times his cousin’s age. What is 4 times his cousin's age in terms of m?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m(1-4) ?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

no just 4 times his cousin's age. Not the expression

OpenStudy (ash2326):

suppose I have x, what is 4 times x???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x

OpenStudy (ash2326):

so what's 4 times cousin's age ( m )?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4m? I'm confused, lol, I'm terribly sorry, I'm bloody horrible at math :x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x(m)?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

@lysbadiukiewicz I'm here to explain you, 4m is correct now what's one less than 4m?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3m?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

m is a variable along with 4, so we can't just subtract 1 from it it'll be 4m -1 when we get the value of m then only we can find it in terms of a number. But the question doesn't ask this, neither it has the required information do you get my point?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes :) Thank you!

OpenStudy (ash2326):

so could I ask you a simple question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure :)

OpenStudy (ash2326):

what's 5 less than 3x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x-5?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

good:D you're correct:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay! Basically its like putting the second part of the problem first and the first part last?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Yeah but we need to read the information given carefully. I'll give you an example

OpenStudy (ash2326):

here we had "1 less than 4 times his cousin’s age." so it boils down to= 4m -1 other case could be " 4 times of 1 less than the cousin's age" it'll be =4 (m-1) do you understand the difference?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The key words, right? Like in the first one, it just said 1 less than 4 times, in the second it said 4 times OF 1 less than.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

yeah, correct:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay! Thank you so much! You seriously helped a lot! :)

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Glad to help:D

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Thanks for the testimonial :D
