First, keep in mind what "character" means in literary terms: character consists of the qualities of the fictional representation of a person(s) in a novel, play, poem, song. In R&J and "CHFin Love" one may use the term "speaker" because what the speakers say and do reflect their characters. Romeo comes back for Juliet even though he knows he will be killed if seen in Verona. Juliet has great lines in III.i. 33-34 that evince her speaker's character, vis a vis, CRAZY LOVE. Shakespeare never does "floral" or easy. Look at the song. The speaker insists, "Shall I stay?/Would it be a sin?/If I can't help falling in love with you." Those lines represent . . . I honestly think the writer just wanted something that would rhyme with "in;" nevertheless, it could be argued that the speaker struggles with the idea of the forbidden, by the use of the term "sin." Character is established by the words and actions of the speakers. Herein is likely the only conflict in the song. The play is LOADED with conflict. Pick a page. The theme of both is love. However, again, Shakespeare gets his hands dirty: this love kills both characters "who can't help falling in love." In the song, the same "love insanity" (to the death) is not manifested. It is sung to an anonymous person. But the the themes are similar: "Like a river flows surely to the sea" indicates that the love experienced is inevitable, unstoppable, and is a force of nature and physics! I've addressed character, conflict, (situationally, the receiver of the song's theme is unknown contrasted with R&J where both lovers are known to the audience), and theme.
is it right guys
